The best process depends on more than the can cooler itself. Transfer material, heat press, temperature, time, pressure, peel method, and technique can all affect the finished result.

Choose Your Customization Method

DTF Transfers

DTF is a popular option for detailed, full-color designs and is used on both foam and neoprene can coolers.

DTF products can vary significantly by supplier, including temperature, pressure, press time, and whether the transfer is designed for a hot, warm, or cold peel.

Heat Transfer Vinyl (HTV)

HTV works well for names, logos, lettering, and other designs cut from heat-applied vinyl.

Both foam and neoprene can be customized with HTV. Foam's smooth, flexible surface makes it an especially popular choice for this method.

Sublimation

Sublimation creates full-color designs by transferring dye into the polyester surface of the can cooler.

White and light-colored can coolers provide the best background for sublimation. Both foam and neoprene are used, while many creators prefer neoprene for higher-temperature pressing.

Good Practices for Heat Transfers

Regardless of which method you use, a few basic practices can help make your results more consistent:

  • Check your transfer instructions. Different vinyls, DTF transfers, papers, inks, and films may require different settings.
  • Test before starting a large batch. Press one can cooler first and make adjustments if needed.
  • Remove lint and surface debris. Start with a clean decorating surface.
  • Protect the sleeve and your press. Use the appropriate protective paper, sheet, or other barrier for your transfer method.
  • Pay attention to pressure. Press settings can vary considerably between machines, especially when pressing a thicker item such as a can cooler.
  • Record what works. Once you have dialed in a successful process, document your temperature, time, pressure, and transfer material before beginning larger production runs.
