Sublimation on Can Coolers: Guide & Pressing Tips

Sublimation is a popular way to create permanent, full-color designs on TahoeBay can coolers. Both our foam and neoprene can coolers have a polyester fabric decorating surface, which allows sublimation dye to transfer into the fabric rather than sitting on top of it.

The primary difference is the insulating material underneath the polyester. Foam can coolers use a polyfoam core, while neoprene can coolers use a neoprene core. Both materials can produce sharp, bright sublimation transfers when pressed using the appropriate temperature, time, and pressure.

Heat presses, sublimation inks, papers, and printers can vary, so we still recommend testing one can cooler before beginning a large production run.

Before You Sublimate

Check Why It Matters
Use white or light-colored blanks Sublimation ink is transparent and does not print white. The color of the can cooler becomes part of the finished design.
Use sublimation ink and paper Regular printer ink and standard paper will not produce the same transfer process.
Lint-roll the polyester Small fibers or debris can become visible as colored specks after pressing, especially on white blanks.
Use clean protective paper Previously transferred sublimation ink can reactivate when heated and transfer onto another part of your project.
Check your pressure TahoeBay can coolers require only very light pressure for sublimation. Excessive pressure can unnecessarily compress the insulating material.
Test one blank first Heat presses, inks, papers, and printers can vary. A test press helps confirm your equipment is producing the expected result before starting a large batch.

Sublimation Quick Start

1. Prepare artwork Set up your design and mirror it before printing when required by your sublimation workflow. For full coverage, make the background larger than the area being decorated.
2. Print Print using sublimation ink and compatible transfer paper. Use the print settings recommended for your printer, ink, and paper combination.
3. Clean the blank Lint-roll the polyester decorating surface carefully. Inspect white blanks under good lighting for stray fibers.
4. Protect the inside Place clean protective paper inside the can cooler. This helps prevent ink from transferring through to the opposite side.
5. Position & tape Place the printed side against the polyester fabric and secure the paper with heat-resistant tape. The transfer should not be able to slide when you move the blank into the press.
6. Press Press at 380°F for 20 seconds using very light pressure. Only enough pressure is needed to create even contact between the transfer and polyester surface.
7. Remove transfer Lift the paper away carefully after pressing. Avoid sliding the transfer across the hot fabric, which can contribute to ghosting.
8. Cool Allow the sleeve to cool. If decorating the second side, let the first side cool before pressing again.

TahoeBay Recommended Sublimation Settings

For TahoeBay foam and neoprene can coolers, use the following sublimation settings.

Pressure matters. "Very light pressure" means the press should provide consistent contact across the transfer without significantly compressing the can cooler. Presses vary, so the exact gap or pressure setting may need to be adjusted for your equipment.

Best to know Avoid unnecessary heat and pressure to help maintain the foam's original shape and thickness. The thicker material may require adjusting your press gap, but heavy pressure is not necessary.

Full-Color and Edge-to-Edge Designs

If you want the design to reach the physical edges of the can cooler, print the artwork larger than the area being decorated. We recommend extending backgrounds and other full-coverage artwork approximately 1/4" beyond the edges of the blank.

This creates an oversize margin that gives you room for small positioning differences and helps prevent thin white areas from appearing along the edges.

How to Tape an Edge-to-Edge Transfer

  1. Print the transfer larger than the can cooler, allowing the background to extend past every edge you want covered.
  2. Place the printed side of the transfer against the polyester surface.
  3. Center the can cooler within the oversized artwork.
  4. Do not stretch the can cooler to make it match the artwork.
  5. Allow the extra printed transfer area to extend beyond the edges of the sleeve.
  6. Secure the excess transfer paper with heat-resistant tape, preferably from the back whenever possible.
  7. Use enough tape that the transfer cannot shift when you pick up the sleeve or place it in the heat press.
  8. After pressing, lift the paper away rather than sliding it across the hot polyester surface.

The seam of an already-sewn can cooler creates a raised area that can make perfectly even pressure difficult right at the edge.

Pressing Both Sides

Step Recommendation
After side one Allow the can cooler to cool before pressing the second side.
Protect the finished side Place clean protective paper over the completed design during the second press.
Replace used paper Do not reuse protective paper that has picked up sublimation ink.
Watch total heat exposure Remember that the blank is receiving heat again. Allowing the first side to cool before pressing the second side helps reduce unnecessary cumulative heat exposure.

Sublimation Troubleshooting

Use the appearance of the finished transfer to help identify what went wrong before changing your settings.

What You See Likely Cause What to Try
Blurry image, shadow, or double image The transfer moved while the sublimation dye was still reacting to heat. Secure the transfer more firmly with heat-resistant tape. Open and close the press smoothly, and lift the transfer away instead of sliding it across the hot fabric.
Image looks soft, hazy, or inconsistent in humid conditions Moisture may be trapped in the polyester fabric or transfer paper. If moisture is suspected, a very brief pre-press may help release it. Keep the pre-press short because it adds additional heat exposure to the blank. Store sublimation paper in a dry environment.
The entire image is faded or too light Insufficient transfer, incorrect supplies, inaccurate press temperature, poor contact, or print-setting issues. First confirm you are using sublimation ink and paper and pressing at 380°F for 20 seconds with even, very light pressure. Verify the actual temperature of your press and check your printer and paper settings before significantly increasing heat exposure.
One area looks good but another area is faded Uneven contact or uneven heating across the heat press. Check for seams, folds, tape, or raised areas under the platen. Make sure the sleeve is flat and the press gap allows even contact. If the same area repeatedly transfers lighter, investigate the platen for a cold spot.
Tiny blue, red, black, or colored specks Lint, fibers, dust, stray sublimation ink, or excessive heat exposure may be contributing to the marks. Lint-roll immediately before pressing. Inspect white blanks closely, keep the workspace clean, use fresh protective paper, and check the press for stray ink. Confirm you are using 380°F for 20 seconds with very light pressure rather than a longer or heavier press cycle.
Colors are sharp but look wrong The problem may be in the printer, artwork, ink, ICC profile, or color-management workflow rather than the heat press. Check the printer nozzle pattern, artwork colors, print settings, and recommended ICC profile. Also remember that sublimation ink is transparent and the blank color affects the final result.
The can cooler looks flattened or overly compressed Too much pressure or excessive heat exposure. Confirm that you're using very light pressure and that the press gap accounts for the sleeve thickness. Use the TahoeBay setting of 380°F for 20 seconds and avoid unnecessarily extending the press cycle.
The fabric looks unusually shiny Excessive heat or pressure may have altered the polyester surface. Confirm the press is set to 380°F for 20 seconds with very light pressure. Test adjustments on a fresh blank rather than repeatedly pressing the same one.
White line or unprinted area along an edge The transfer was sized too closely to the blank, shifted, or did not make full contact near the seam. Extend the printed background past the physical edge, secure the oversized transfer carefully, and avoid placing tape between the artwork and polyester. For maximum coverage, use an unsewn blank.
Ink appears somewhere it wasn't printed Previously transferred sublimation ink was reheated and transferred again. Use clean protective paper inside, above, and below the project as needed. Discard paper after it picks up ink and check the platen for previous ink contamination.
Second side has unexpected marks from the first design The completed first side was exposed to heat against contaminated or unprotected material. Allow the first side to cool, cover it with fresh protective paper, and make sure no used sublimation paper is touching the completed design.
Repeated presses keep making the result worse The same blank is receiving cumulative heat exposure, making it difficult to tell which adjustment helped. Return to 380°F for 20 seconds with very light pressure and use a fresh test blank whenever possible. Change only one variable at a time if troubleshooting your particular equipment.

Protecting Against Unwanted Ink Transfer

Why Your Equipment Can Still Affect Results

TahoeBay's recommended setting is 380°F for 20 seconds with very light pressure, but sublimation still depends on several pieces of equipment and material working together: your printer, ink, transfer paper, heat press, pressure, and the product being decorated.

Even two heat presses set to the same displayed temperature may perform differently in actual use. Some presses can also apply significantly different amounts of pressure at what appears to be the same adjustment.

For the most reliable process:

  1. Start with 380°F for 20 seconds with very light pressure.
  2. Make sure your printer, sublimation ink, and transfer paper are being used according to their manufacturer's instructions.
  3. Test one TahoeBay can cooler before beginning a larger production batch.
  4. If an adjustment is needed for your particular equipment, change only one variable at a time.
