Sublimation on Can Coolers: Guide & Pressing Tips
Sublimation is a popular way to create permanent, full-color designs on TahoeBay can coolers. Both our foam and neoprene can coolers have a polyester fabric decorating surface, which allows sublimation dye to transfer into the fabric rather than sitting on top of it.
The primary difference is the insulating material underneath the polyester. Foam can coolers use a polyfoam core, while neoprene can coolers use a neoprene core. Both can be sublimated, although neoprene generally tolerates the longer high-temperature press cycles commonly used for sublimation more easily.
Important: There is no single universal sublimation setting that works for every printer, ink, paper, heat press, and blank.
Use the guidance below as a starting point, then test one can cooler before beginning a larger production run.

Before You Sublimate

Sublimation Quick Start

Recommended Starting Settings
If you do not already have established settings for your equipment and sublimation supplies, use these as general starting points.

These are starting points, not universal settings. A combination that works perfectly with one heat press, paper, ink, and printer may need to be adjusted when any of those variables change.

Full-Color and Edge-to-Edge Designs
If you want the design to reach the physical edges of the can cooler, print the artwork larger than the area being decorated. We recommend extending backgrounds and other full-coverage artwork approximately 1/4" beyond the edges of the blank.
This creates an oversize margin that gives you room for small positioning differences and helps prevent thin white areas from appearing along the edges.

How to Tape an Edge-to-Edge Transfer
- Print the transfer larger than the can cooler, allowing the background to extend past every edge you want covered.
- Place the printed side of the transfer against the polyester surface.
- Center the can cooler within the oversized artwork.
- Do not stretch the can cooler to make it match the artwork.
- Allow the extra printed transfer area to extend beyond the edges of the sleeve.
- Secure the excess transfer paper with heat-resistant tape, preferably from the back whenever possible.
- Use enough tape that the transfer cannot shift when you pick up the sleeve or place it in the heat press.
- After pressing, lift the paper away rather than sliding it across the hot polyester surface.

The seam of an already-sewn can cooler creates a raised area that can make perfectly even pressure difficult right at the edge.

Pressing Both Sides

Sublimation Troubleshooting
Use the appearance of the finished transfer to help identify what went wrong before changing your settings.

Protecting Against Unwanted Ink Transfer

Why We Don't Give One Universal Sublimation Setting
Sublimation depends on several pieces of equipment and material working together: your printer, ink, transfer paper, heat press, temperature, pressure, time, and the product being decorated.
Even two heat presses set to the same displayed temperature may perform differently in actual use.
For the most reliable process, use information in this order:
- Your established sublimation system and supply instructions
- TahoeBay product and preparation guidance
- Your own test press before beginning a larger batch
